A Look at the Past
- Caribbean Carnival
- Traditionally in many Caribbean and African countries, there is a yearly
celebration, commonly referred to as Carnival. On September 24, 1994 ACCC
brought this tradition to the University of
Rochester. This atmosphere is recreated annually in the Fall Semester.
Schools from the neighboring community are welcomed and encouraged to
participate through presentations or attendance.
- Spot Light Cafe
- An annual event normally held in the Fall Semester. This gives students
an opportunity to share the richness of their heritage through dramatical
inerpretations, poetry readings, song and dance. Any and everyone is
welcome to participate. This event is usually held in the Common Ground
Cafe.
- The Jamaican Dance Theater
- The Jamaican Dance Theater performed at the University of Rochester's
Strong Auditorium on October 22, 1995. This group was on tour of the United
States straight from Jamaica.
- Community Service
- ACCC does a variety of community service acts year round. One involves
the education of children, within the neighboring community, about the
countries of Africa and island lands of the Caribbean. Another service act
that we are involved with is comprised of food drives for the needy at
Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter time.
- ACCC Week
- This week has traditionally been held during the month of February. It
is a week long of activities ranging from guest speakers to dialy
presentations to a Caribbean Jeopardy to the grand finale - which was
Showcase'96 this year.
- Showcase '96
- This year we began something new. It is meant to be a grand event where
all are invited to see and here and look at the rich cultures ACCC had to
offer. It was a beautiful array of artifacts, and talent as the members of
ACCCshowed off the heritage. This year it was held on Saturday, February
24, 1996, 1996. Hopefully, this will become an annual endeavor for ACCC.
- ACCC Dance Troupe
- This dance troupe was started by one of our members as a way of
culturally expressing the richness of the lands that ACCC represents. There
are calypso, french music, reggae, African and Spanish music incorperated
into the many dances. We have performed at various events - Showcase '96,
the International Fiesta, and Radiance's Spring concert, all held at the
University.
