stands for Association for the Development of Interest in The Indian sub-continent.
Our purpose is to promote a greater awareness of social, cultural,
and political issues concerning South Asia. In addition, ADITI reaches
out to all members of the UR community, encouraging a true cultural
unity by celebrating our differences.

The ADITI Constitution
We the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Rochester do
hereby establish ADITI (Association for the Development of Interest
in the Indian Subcontinent) of the University of Rochester and enact
this constitution for its government. ADITI is not affiliated with any
formal national organization. The purpose of the association is to promote
and express the cultural and ethnic diversity of the Indian Subcontinent,
which includes the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indian,
Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. We intend to contribute to the
university community by sponsoring and participating in events, both
artistic, academic, and social. In the course of the year, we intend
to showcase the rich heritage through music, dance, and cinematic diversity
of the Indian subcontinent culture. We also intend to sponsor speakers
to lecture on both historical and contemporary issues.
ARTICLE I
A. Statement of Purpose
The organization shall be known as the Association for the Development
of Interest in the Indian Subcontinent, referred to as the ADITI. The
purpose of the Association is to promote awareness and appreciation
of the South Asian culture. ADITI exists to provide an opportunity to
interact and share the history, culture, and experiences of the subcontinent.
B. General Restrictions
In order to maintain the integrity of the University, ADITI will not
support or renounce any current or past political issues not related
to our purposes. ADITI will always remain independent from any other
organization.
ARTICLE II
A. Meetings
1. A meeting is valid if a quorum, plus one-half of the executive officers
are present.
2. The quorum consists of at least twice the size of the executive board.
ARTICLE III
A. Membership
1. Any student, faculty and staff interested in the South Asian culture
are eligible for membership.
2. All members must accept the goals of the organization.
3. Members must participate in meetings, programs, and activities, and
they are welcome to offer ideas that will achieve the goals of the organization.
4. Non-active membership means that a member has not participated in
50% of the activities.
B. Voting
1. Voting on any issue is official only if the meeting is valid.
2. All members have one vote on a given issue (e.g. officers cannot
be given extra weight for their vote).
3. Voting is a membership privilege, and all members present at the
voting meeting are allowed to vote on the issue.
4. Voting will be done by close ballot. A decision will be reached by
the majority vote on a particular issue or issues being raised in the
meeting.
ARTICLE IV
A. Officers and qualifications
1. All officers must be members of the Association for the Development
of Interest in The Indian Subcontinent.
2. The Executive Board of ADITI shall consist of a President, Vice President,
Business Manager, Web-designer, two Publicity Managers, two Cultural
Directors, and one or two Committee Chairs.
3. This organization shall be an important institution for collective
leadership and the prevention of monopolization of power by any member.
B. Duties of Officers
1. The President shall be the Chief Executive of ADITI and shall preside
over the meetings. The President shall be delegated power to cancel
or call any meetings. The President shall also be the representative
of ADITI and in this capacity shall serve and protect the interests
of the group.
2. The Vice President shall preside over the Executive Committee meetings,
aid in Presidential duties.
3. The Business Manager shall be responsible for all funds received
and spent by ADITI, keep financial records, draw the annual budget and
submit it to the Student Appropriation's Committee.
4. The Publicity Managers shall be responsible for publicizing the activities
and meetings of ADITI.
5. The Web designer shall frequently update and maintain the website.
6. The Cultural Directors shall be responsible for the logistical organization
of cultural, educational, and recreational events.
7. The Committee Chair shall help ADITI expand by organizing new events
and assisting with various other events.
C. Elections
1. Election of new officers will take place in April of the year.
2. Term of office - one academic year
3. The officers shall be elected by a simple majority of members present
at the meeting.
4. Candidates running for the position of President must have served as a member of the ADITI executive board for a minimum of one year.
ARTICLE V
Finances
Students' Association members shall receive priority at SA funded events
conducted by this association.
ARTICLE VI
Amendments
At least 3 active members are required to propose an amendment. Members
shall be informed of the proposal at the next meeting. A constitutional
amendment is approved by two-thirds vote of the meeting's active members.
ARTICLE VII
Adoption of the Constitution
1. Two-thirds of the executive board must approve the constitution.
2. This constitution should not conflict with the Students' Association
constitution or by-laws.
ARTICLE VIII
Hazing Policy
The harassment of one individual by another individual or group (sometimes
called hazing) is not permitted by ADITI. Behavior prohibited under
this rule includes actions threatening substantial risk of physical
or mental injury; actions exposing the individual to distressing, repulsive,
or alarming situations or sensations; forced consumption of alcohol
or drugs; actions in the form of social pressure which might cause harm
to an individual. |
