Congratulations to the Theta Kappa Class of 2007!

PHI-Lanthropy

Our philanthropy is the Alpha Phi Foundation, and women's Cardiac Care. The foundation's mission is to "provide leadership and educational opportunities, encourage and recognize superior scholarship, [and] support women's cardiac health." Alpha Phi Foundation was founded in 1956. The chosen philanthropy was chosen to be cardiac care during WWII because rheumatic fever was the leading killer of American children. Alpha Phi wished to help these children while still having the flexibility to contribute service to other programs. As time went on, modern medicine conquered rheumatic fever, and heart disease became the top killer in American women, and "Alpha Phi Foundation thought it fitting that an organization of women help fight it."
Doing Our Part

Our chapter holds events and raises funds to help communities learn more about causes, prevention, and treatment of heart disease. Theta Kappa holds two major philanthropy events per year.
Alpha Traz

Each fall, we hold a concert event called Alpha Traz. We ask important and well-known figures from campus (students, professors, and staff) to volunteer to be our 'prisoners.' From there, we table and raise money from people, mostly students, on campus to pledge money for Cardiac Care and the Foundation to keep those figures at the event. The figures who raise the most money are required to stay at the event the longest...in plastic handcuffs. We also raise funds by selling tickets to the event. At Alpha Traz, we serve food and drink, usually pizza, snacks, and soda pop, and have local bands and artists perform. As the event continues, our prisoners are released from their handcuffs. Overall, Alpha Traz is a fun social event for a wonderful cause, which is why we tell our guests "Come for the good time, stay for the good cause."
Cardiac Care Week (CCW)

Each spring, we hold a week in February (Cardiac Care Month), usually around Valentine's Day to raise awareness on the University of Rochester campus about women's cardiac care and maintaining healthy hearts. In past years, we have made and distributed stress balls and heart-healthy recipes. We sponsor a dinner night at Danforth Dining Hall that features only heart-healthy meal options, as well as invite MERT (UR's student emergency medical service team), in accordance with University Health Services give free blood pressure readings. Throughout Cardiac Care Week, we encourage cardiac activity and exercise, such as jump-roping and trips to the gym. Throughout the week, we wear Cardiac Care shirts and red dress pins to show our support. This year's theme is via the popular Go-Go's song "We've got the beat".
