The Club

The University of Rochester Equestrian Club was founded for the purpose of providing UR students with a fun and safe way to enjoy horseback riding lessons. We welcome everyone from beginners to Medal Maclay finalists. This variety gives members ample chance to learn from their peers and to spread their own knowledge to others. For those beginners, and anyone else who’s interested, we offer horsemanship clinics at the beginning of each semester.

All Equestrian Team members take at least one hunt seat lesson a week during the semester with our coach, Peggy Gauger, at Way Farm. Interested riders may take more than one lesson a week, and Show Team riders are especially encouraged to do so. These lessons are organized at the beginning of each semester so that each lesson contains around 4-6 riders of similar ability.

Students wishing to bring their horse with them to school should get in touch with Way Farm at 585.872.0395 to discuss arrangements. Stall availablity fluctuates, so if this is something you're considering, you should contact them sooner than later. There is the opportunity to compete individually at shows year round, local through A-rated, with other Way Farm clients.

While we are not yet a varsity sport, our show team does compete against large varsity teams in New York State in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), which is fun (but completely optional). We are hoping to become a varsity sport in the near future. The fun does not stop at the barn; we get together for dinners and enjoy each others company at other activities.
