Karin Costich
Owner/ Stable Manager
Engleside Stables is a full-service equine facility. We have been at our present location, 1637 Salt Road in Penfield, New York, for approx. 10 years. We specialize in hunters, hunt seat equitation and dressage.
Our farm rests on 35 acres of mostly fenced-in pastures to provide maximum turnout for our equine partners. We have a large indoor arena for all weather riding (72 ft x 192 ft) with a spacious heated viewing lounge. We have 2 large outdoor arenas, each measuring 100 ft x 200 ft. Horses are turned out daily in large grass pastures in small groups. Box stalls are cleaned daily and horses receive 2 daily meals. Lessons can be taken on a well-trained school horse or on your own horse. Showing is offered for all levels of riders. We show at most local shows and right on up through the A-rated shows.
I, Karin Costich, am the owner of Engleside Stables. My husband, CJ and I, along with our 3 daughters, Jerica, Olivia, and Carly, all live and work on the farm. I have been involved in the equine world since I was 7 years old. I started my “career” in horses at a local stable and rode as a lesson student until I was 16 years old. At that time my parents finally let me purchase my own first horse- boy, was I in for an education! She was a very green appaloosa mare and she had her own idea of how the world ran! She taught me a lot. When I graduated from R.L. Thomas High School in Webster I wanted to work with animals as a career and I attended SUNY Canton. After one semester as a small animal vet tech major I missed the horses terribly! I then transferred to SUNY Morrisville and finished my formal education in Equine Studies. After graduating from Mo-ville I took a job with John Madden Sales Inc. and traveled to Florida as a groom. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn from a great trainer and be exposed to the awesome world of the Florida circuit.
After returning to New York in 1986, I took my first teaching position at a stable in Webster. I taught there for 2 years before taking a position at another stable in Mendon, New York. I taught about a year before I had my first child, Jerica, and at that time I could not teach at all the odd hours and raise a family. For the next 6 years I rode some with George Paterson. In 1997, my husband CJ and I bought our present home and farm at on Salt Road and named it Engleside, after a family homestead. I started teaching again and the program grew to support 12 lesson horses as well as take many students to area horse shows.
We stared Engleside with 24 stalls and only an outdoor ring, and now, almost 10 years later, we have 48 stalls, a large indoor ring, 2 outdoor rings, and an ever-growing clientele. I recently made the decision to stop teaching to pursue an amateur career with my present horse and to make more time for my family.
We hope that our relationship with the University of Rochester will be a long and positive one, and we are certain we will be able to take the team to the next level!
Our doors are always open and we welcome visitors; stop by and see our beautiful facility! |
