Philanthropy:

At the 1982 National Convention, the convention body unanimously agreed to adopt Prevent Child Abuse America as Sigma Delta Tau's National Philanthropy. Prevent Child Abuse America is a voluntary organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse through citizen action. Each Sigma Delta Tau chapter conducts an annual service project, educational program, or major fund raiser for the benefit of Prevent Child Abuse America.  Together, SDT chapters contribute more than $50,000 each year to their National Philanthropy. For more information about Prevent Child Abuse America, check out the organization's website: http://www.preventchildabuse.org

The Beta Pi Chapter sponsors two major philanthropic events a year to support Prevent Child Abuse America. We hold a "Mr. U of R" competition each fall, where ten of UR's studliest/bravest men compete for the title. Over $800 was raised last fall. In the spring of 2007, we sponsored a very successful Pancake Dinner, which featured $5 all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of toppings, and a special performance from the D'Motions Dance Groupe. Over $500 was raised fro PCAA! For more information, contact our Annual Philanthropy Chair, Caitlin Carragee, at ccarrage@mail.rochester.edu.

In addition, members of SDT choose to participate in a variety of other philanthropic activities in their free time. For example, sisters have been involved with The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, Habitat for Humanity, tutoring programs at Cameron and pen pal programs with terminally ill children. For more information about alternative philanthropy activities that SDT is involved with, contact our Rotating Philanthropy Chair, Jayne Van Sciatch, at jvanscha@mail.rochester.edu.
