Pizzaria Uno's Fundraiser - 17 September

Enjoy good, off-campus pizza and help raise money for Tiernan too! All day long, Pizzaria Uno will donate 20% of the bills of customers who present a special coupon to the Tiernan Project. Tiernanites will go enjoy the pizza themselves as a social activity.

A-Socks-Ination - 22 September

Played like Assasins, except that instead of a popsicle stick kills are made by throwing a (clean, please!) rolled up sock at their target. Cost to participate is $2; prize to the winner.

Cyrus has swept (socked?) away all the competition for this event, winning Most Kills (8, with Gail as runner up at 3) and Last Alive ('cause there's nothing this guy does better than stake out girls' bedrooms and bathrooms).

Apple Picking - 4 October

Tiernanites went apple and raspberry picking at Green Acres in Greece.

Nothing like the taste of an apple you picked just a second ago....All told, the Tiernanites came away with over 30 pounds of apples, Cortland and Honey Crisp and others whose names I can't remember. Also almost a whole ounce of raspberries (in the bag...and perhaps another ounce in our stomachs). Laura F. and Lauren promptly made apple pie and apple crisp, while Melissa just happens to eat that many apples in a week or two.

Potluck Dinner - 23 October

Everyone who comes brings a dish, and then we all share and socialize. Here's a chance to eat on campus, and not your own (rather boring by now, isn't it?) cooking.

Who knew the Tiernan Project was home to such talented (or at least inventive) chefs? Whethere it was Cyrus's mass grilled hot dogs, Lyndsay's Ghetto Shephard's Pie (instant potatoes mixed with the kind of canned beef the corner store sells), Gail's fruit salad or Laura F. and Lauren's Spinach Quiche (pictured), Tiernanites came up with any number of delicious dishes for all who cared to partake.

Shabbat Hagadol - 24 October

The largest Jewish gathering in Rochester, celebrating the Jewish New Year with services and then dinner. Traditional Jewish food is provided along with a performance by UR's Jewish Acapella group and other inspirational pieces.

With so many people in the know along (Melissa, Seth and Laura all provided information on precisely what was going on) how could anyone not have fun? Free food, culture and the opportunity to watch Laura Z. and Brian dance it out.

Cape Day - 14 November

Our second annual Cape Day! Started by Flint, our RA last year, Cape Day is the daycape zone sign where everyone should wear a cape on hall. Capes are not mandatory for going to classes or running errands, but wear them on hall! There will be a showing of a cape-related movie in Mike's room. Only cape wearers will be admitted (invisibility capes don't count).

A half dozen brave souls were willing to wear capes for the day, at least while on hall (some of them were not weather worthy for November). Flint even dropped by from his Rochester area job to perform a cameo and join in the watching (and Masterpiece Theatre 3000-ing) Superman II. Congratulations to those superheroes who were willing to abandon their secret identities and enter the cape zone without fear.

Turkey Party - 22 November

The major social event for the academically hectic November and December 2003 was the Tiernan Project Turkey Party. Unfortunately, the hall's semi-official photographer's computer died and all pictures normally available for the website were lost, except for a video that will not be put on the web (email the webmaster if you want a copy of Laura Zysman and Dave I.'s winning Turkey Skit). If you have any pictures or comments to contribute regarding the party, please inform the webmaster.

Weiner Party - 6 February

Mike had quantities of hot dogs (left over from an APO event, and nothing to do with those missing from Douglass) and decided to share the joy of hot dogs by cooking for the entire hall. Chips and condiments provided.

Steve, Larua, Gail, Cathy and Kenny show their love of be-condimented hot dogs. The great mustard vs. ketchup vs. salsa (apparently a valid substitute for relish) debate continues.

Secret Valentines - 14 February

Secret Valentines works the same way Secret Buddies has worked in the past. Everyone who signs up will be assigned their one secret Valentine. Provide notes or small gifts throughout the week and something special for Valentine's Day, and receive the same from your Secret Valentine. Secret Valentines will be revealed on the Tiernan Meeting the Sunday after Valentine's Day.

Remember back in the good old days of elementary and middle school, when every student was required to put out a shoebox and make Valentine's cards for everyone in their class? Well, the Tiernan Project aims to relive those glory days! Sign up for Valentine's Cards, decorate a paper bag and on Valentine's Day, you'll have cards from everyone else who made bags (true to fourth grade form, if you expect to receive Valentine's you also have to make them).

Making the Campus Safe for the GLBT Community - 17 February

Lyndsay and Seth are doing a presentation for the RA class and have invited all the Tiernan Project to attend. Also provided will be information on how to become Safe Zone trained. "Support your fellow Tiernanites in all they do." (Laura Zysman).

Aimed at informing those present about the difficulties and stereotypes faced by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community, Lyndsay and Seth managed to present a great balance of info and fun (despite not having any free food to offer). Among other things, participants were asked to fill out a table to determine how much they flaunted their heterosexuality (and no, that isn't a typo), inlcuding the displaying of pictures of members of the opposite sex, comments made about the attractiveness of members of the opposite sex, etc. in the past month and past year. Not surprisingly, some of us are great flaunters...without any of the repercussions experienced by anyone flaunting homosexuality.

International Night - 19 February

Time for a night of good food, fun and entertainment! Represent a country by bringing food, a game, traditional dress, or other cultural items or information for your fellow Tiernanites' entertainment and edification.

Tiernan proves itself to be a very international community with all sorts of lessons and food from various countries arounderic and his card game the world. These included:

  • Brian's Swiss math problem (the Koninsberg bridges)

  • Gail's Norweigan snowman (ice cream cake, fresh from Norway) with Norweigan facts

  • Mike's Mexican nacho dish

  • Aiza's photo essay from the Phillipines

  • Eric and Cathy's Chinese card game

  • Laura's photos, maps and paraphanalia from London

  • Steve's history of UK-based Cadbury's chocolates

  • Crystal's presentation of Sushi from Japan

  • Uyen's Vietnamese egg rolls, home made by her mother

  • Cyrus's french bread, liver pate (recipient of mixed reviews) and French cheese

  • Katye's translation of all relevant country names into ASL

Spaghetti Dinner - 26 February

The Spaghetti Dinner is Tiernan's annual Faculty-Student involvement event. We specifically invite all the Freshmen and numerous Faculty and Staff members to come enjoy spaghetti and interact in a casual dining environment. This is the chance for everyone to see each other in a new way, or to actually talk to Dean Rossen-Knil or whomever you desire that doesn't involve going through secretaries. Tiernanites are asked to help set up and clean up as well as enjoy the massive amounts of spagetti that we will be making.

A very successful night, with pasta, salad, bread and desert aplenty. Despite the mishap of extremely burned pasta (who knew it was possible?) that put one pot out of commission, we had a great time. Approximately 15 faculty and staff came (I guess they are also enticed by offers of free food) and 70 freshmen.
