University of Rochester Bellman Society

About the Society:

The University of Rochester Bellman Society, founded in 1953, gives undergraduates the opportunity to play the Hopeman Memorial Carillon. Its members receive instruction from Rochester local Doris Aman, as well as tutor each other in the instrument. Their playing can be heard frequently during the warmer months.

Anyone with an interest in learning to play the carillon may join the Society, regardless of musical or carillon background. If you are interested in joining or learning more about the club, please go to our join page and submit your information.

About the Carillon

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon is a clavier-operated musical instrument that consists of 50 bells located in the tower of the Rush Rhees Library. One of only six carillons in New York state, it hosts UR's student carillonneurs, as well as professional carilloneurs from around the world who play in UR's annual carillon concert series.
