They will be able to give you more information, and potentially arrange a visit to check out the team. This is a team that trains hard to win races and has a great time on and off the water. Rowing at the University of Rochester is sizable commitment, one that brings with it many benefits. Making friends, maintaining fitness, and learning valuable skills both on and off the water make crew a great experience.

Check out our new riverside indoor training facility.

As a team, we welcome all types (and shapes) of people. No rowing experience is needed to join the team. Many of our rowers previously participated in a different sport before joining the team, and are able to easily adapt and build upon their fitness base to become a valuable member of our team.

as a novice

You will first learn the basics of rowing, then continue to train, advancing your technique and fitness. Our boathouse is located at the intersection of the Genesee River and Erie Canal a half-mile walk from campus. Thanks to generous support from our alumni, we can boast a fine collection of eights and fours that are continually being updated. We also have an erg room available to us at the Goergen Athletic Center throughout the year.

Crew is a year round sport at UR with head races in the fall and sprints in the spring, connected by indoor training through the winter. We row both novice and varsity programs in eights, fours, and occasionally pairs. Experienced freshmen will have the chance to seat race into varsity boats, depending on their fitness, skill, and commitment.

Many current rowers are walk-ons who didn't row before they came to the University. The team can also always use coxswains, smaller individuals who are responsible for steering the boat and coordinating the rowers, so if you're interested in the sport, we will have a place for you no matter what.
