About Us
The 2004-2005 season
marked the reestablishment of Women's Rugby at the University of
Rochester. While the new team struggled to find enough players, avid
recruitment by founding members and coach Jules Crawford turned this
group of crazy ruggers into a full team by the 2007 season. A
knack for tackling earned the team the official name Sledgehammers
given by Coach Jules, along with an actual Sledgehammer as a mascot. In Fall 2008, the
Sledgehammers welcomed their new coach, Donielle Peck, of the
Rochester Renegades Rugby Football Club as well as several new
players. We not only won our first matches that season, but
also placed third in our division at the Spring 2009 Rugby Upstates
Tournament, earning praise for how quickly we were able to become a
competitive club under Doni's coaching. For Fall 2009 the Sledgehammers loudly introduced themselves into New York State Rugby league play, entering Division III and going undefeated through the regular season and playoffs, clinching both the NYS D3 title as well as a spot in the NSCRO Division III Nationals competition. The Sledgehammers will be upgraded to Division II for league play in the Fall of 2010.
